Nice looking fish!! I wonder, are they skittish when you approach the glass? I'm debating dither fish and really like the looks of these, to bad they get so big.
It says they get up to 6 inches. Is that true?
Hi Gamegurl,
thank you for the nice comment and also for your questions.
Yes,they can be a little skittish initially...dart to the back of the tank when you approach (but they are inquisitive and quickly return to "see what's goin' on"...check out the new face : )
But this is only when they are first introduced into the tank.
Eventually (4-6 weeks possibly),they settle and become quite used to movement around the tank etc.
They are viracious feeders and their speed and agility is unbelievable.
The only aggression (i wouldnt really call it that) that ive ever seen from these fish consists of a "head lift" or a gentle sideways shimmy...and that's it : ) and its only amongst themselves,NEVER other fish (a few of my Neons sleep amongst them at night, which is really cute lol).
You're correct GG,they can grow to approx' 6 inches but the average is around the 4 to 41/2 inch mark.
Their full growth potential seems to be realised in a larger environment.
Males and females are hard to distinguish but the best way is to look down on the fish, from above...the females will have an oviously fatter stomach (it protrudes out from the sides more). The males are a little smaller and have a slimmer stomach and a slimmer overall profile.
The tail banding and black stripe, that runs the length of their body, become more pronounced with age and various metallic colours start showing across their bodies in the right light.
They become very inquisitive and like to check you out...and i know this sounds CRAZY...But, if you "bop" at them (with your mouth),they become highly interactive and a lot of fun : )
Mine do a syncronised dive down the from glass, while shimmying and playing and then go straight back to the top to wait in line,to do it again LOL It looks absolutely amazing when 6-8 Scissortails are doing this together...I LOVE THESE FISH !
