Well, get a calcium test kit (SeaChem makes a good one) and find out where your calcium is at before you add too much or too little, and then go from there. You might not need to add as much as is recommended and you don't want to overdose on calcium

I agree that you need to test to determine if you need to dose. The recommended amount is meaningless because all reef tanks consume Calcium at different rates.

You should also test Alkalinity. This parameter is even more important than Calcium for growing corals.

You should never dose anything you dont test for and depending on your WC's and amount and type of corals you have the WC's could be enough. I also suggest that if you are dosing Cal. you should also be testing your Alk and Mag because all 3 go together and need to be balanced IMO
