Several years ago (about 10) when I had all my tanks they all had UG filters. I have been told more recently that they do more harm then good. I used the search feature and didn't find much. What do most on here think about them for FW tanks. Do you guys use them?

absolutely not.

with all the innovations in filtration, there is no need for this system. while some argue that it allows for a larger surface area of bio media, they do more harm than good. it traps all the decaying detrius and other debris under the tank forming what is essentially a nuclear ammonia factory, and are a real pain to thuroughly clean, so most people dont clean it like they should.

but getting away from all that, you can get a good canister or HOB filter for a practical price, and they will be more effective.

If you search a few other forums you will find a couple of heated discussions. I started one myself (I too used UGFs for 20 years) and after I started my 55g on 1/1/9 after a 7 year hiatus, I eventually went with a Marineland C-360 canister and pulled the UGF plates in 2 stages. I will never, ever go back. It was the best move I ever made, maintaining the tank is a breeze, and cleaning is soooooo much easier.

Do yourself a favor and ditch the UGF.

I have used UG filters and they work fine. I find they limit what I can do in terms of plants and they require more maintenance than I like to do on my tanks. I now use mostly sponges or canisters depending on what I intend to do with a tank. Sponges are for fry tanks and canisters are for larger community type tanks or tanks with larger fry in them.

My uncle used them in his OLD tanks years ago and had no issues, However with all the new filters out & Bio-media i feel no need for them.
