Hello, I'm looking 4 a little advice on putting some new fish in my tank. I had a mixed tank with warm water fish (a barb and some cories) and 3 goldfish (which is a no, no.) but due to a recent 8 day power loss (huge wind storm, 81 mph recorded gusts) the tank got too cold and... Of course, the goldies are fine (50 degree water is no worry for them) but now they need some new tank mates that are compatible so everybody's happy. I've dropped the water temp to 72 and would like fish that are happy down there.

I have a 125g tank. It's 6 feet long so plenty of swimming room. Cascade 700 canister filter, Penguin 350 HOB bio-filter, power head w/sponge filter, 3 heaters, fluorescent light (soon to be LED), air, plants, etc.

The survivors: 2 big Fantails (6 inch) and 1 big (10 inch) common.

Here's what I was thinking. 6 to 8 Rosy Barbs. Middle swimmers and schoolers so they shouldn't bug the goldies. Also colorful. More cory cats and maybe a couple of smaller plecos. Bristle nose? Don't want to overstock so what are your thoughts there? Temperature?

Also getting a generator so this won't happen again.

Appreciate any and all replies. Thanks in advance. :smile2:

Good to know ya got ample room. (Agree with wes, love to see pics!) You want to steer clear of tropical species. As you said pleco species ancestris would be fine with the goldies. Other cold water species I can think of are killies (Just noting that i am not sure if they can coexist with gold fish or not, but that they are cold water fish) and there are prob. some schoolers that are good for cold water as well, though I dont know types off hand.

Here are some pics of my fish. (note: the fish do not like having their pictures taken.) Pretty hard to see but the tank is 18" wide so maybe that helps. I chased them around with a tape measure and as best I can tell I have guessed them a little larger than they actually are. My biggest fish (the big common, Wilma) is actually closer to 9 inches and the other two (Dori & Nemo) are more like 5" and 4". Oh well, still pretty good size. A little background and age. I got Wilma (big common) when my daughter "rescued" her from a friends house. (Wilma showed up in my tank that day. Hmmm...) She was in the 5th grade at the time. That was 10 years ago so Wilma is probably around 12 years old now. Wilma also spent a year outside in the pond at out old house. She was smaller then but seemed to love it. Maybe we'll put a pond in our new house for her someday. Dori & Nemo are about 3 years old I think and came to us when our grand daughter got tired of cleaning the 2.5g tank they were in. Actually her mom got tired of it. Big surprise there. Dori & Nemo came with there names. Worked out well for them. 2.5g to 125g tank. That must have been quite a rush. Oh and Wilma... she needed a name way back when and it was all I could think of. My bad I guess. Seems to fit her though. :)

What I would suggest is a large school of white cloud minnows. As for cories most of your petshop cories will handle cooler waters.
Susankat, yeah I thought about white clouds, they would be awesome but was steered away because they might get eaten by my much bigger fish. What do you think? I understand I might lose a couple until they get bigger. Or would they always be in danger? Also, I feed my fish twice a week. Keeps them healthy. Maybe too hungry in this case though... *J/D* Anyhoo, just wondering. Oh yes, cories are a given. :)

Summer, I thought about more goldies too. A great choice. You can't get a friendlier fish. :):fish5:

Yeah goldfish have been known to eat those little guys. Some people have put them in and not more then a minute goes by and all of them were eaten. I would not recommend putting them in with goldfish. But how about a weather loach? There are actually a lot of coldwater fish if you look for them.

I don't have any experience with them, but they do look nice. Especially the long finned ones.

Yeah they're lookers. Kinda like my Tinfoil only way smaller. Good old Curly. He was what... 8-9 years old? There were 3 originally. Larry, Moe & Curly. 2-3 inches, cute and fast. Really fast. RIP Curly. Anyhoo, still not sure what fish to get next. Gotta wait til after Christmas though. Santa might bring some cool new fish stuff. LED light, plants, tools.. (Wait, tools?) :)
