How do you trim pompom goldfish

Hello!
I have a calico egg fish with pom poms. His pom poms are so large that he is not starting to bite them. When I bought him the people told me he would be due for a trimming soon. Would really appreciate any tips on pom pom trimming. Don't want the poor little fish to eat his poms.
