I have been in the hobby over 20 years, the last 17 years have been in reef tanks. It took me years and hundreds of man/hours to build the reef tank of my dreams and now due to the economy I am forced to give it up and return to freshwater. I am coming here to get my memory refreshed as it has been a long time since I had a freshwater set up.

I need advice on substrate and water movement for a 180 gallon Oscar tank.
What would be the best choice for substate?
I currently have Koralia pumps for circulation in my reef tank, will i want to keep them for the freshwater set up?

Yeah I know they can get fiesty. I have had them before a looooong time ago.
I think I will opt for pea gravel rather than sand. I just thought maybe the circulation pumps might help keep the waste (poo) in the water column long enough for it to make it into the sump where it can be easily removed.
Maybe not a good idea?
