I just bought this thing and love it! I was worried at first since you can't use the legs with most set ups. I have a glass canopy and trim around my tank so the legs won't work... however, the guys at the Aquarium Depot here in Baltimore assured me I could lay it directly on the glass without fear of heat transfer and they were right. Wow it really brightens up the tank! I also received an interesting lesson about the 2 to 3 watts per gallon rule and how really outdated it is. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with this purchase. Now to find a decent moon light strip and I'm done!!

I need new lights.

What is outdated about the 2-3 Watts per gallon rule i am interested as that is what i was told to do for plants in a tropical tank.

Uh Oh

Tried a couple of web pages on Google and prices all in dollars so the lights i saw were only in the U.S.

I am in the U.K

The other thing i noticed is that they were sold as Marine lights and i have Tropical.

Does the 1-2 or 3 Watts a gallon still hold with tropical plants in a freshwater tank.

Sorry for the mix up in the thread but i have to learn sometime LOL.

What is outdated about the 2 or 3 watts per gallon is simple. A T-5 HO will put out a lot more light than the same wattage of T-12. The difference is almost a 50% improvement in light efficiency. What I assume the meaning is would be that the 108 watts of T-5 HO that I have over my 55 gallon, is plenty for plants that need well over 2 WPG in a typical listing. I treat the tank as if it was 2.5 to 3 WPG instead of one with less than 2.

I thought I referenced an article that explained about lumens and how that's far more important then just plain watt power.
