I was given a 50 gallon Former saltwater tank and I only do freshwater tanks currently and I was wondering if I can clean it out well and convert it to freshwater. The tank had been sitting outside for a couple years but still has a lot of salt on it.

Thanks

Yes you can. Just clean it out with viniger and water.

the problem with this project (and i'm speaking from experience) is that salt is good at filling small holes and leaving a fish tank outside for any amount of time can be detrimental as the silicon can pull away from the sides as it reacts to the thermal changes. make sure its water tight all the way to the line and take a ruby laser and shine it along the sides of the tank to check for micro cracks and flaws this will ensure nothing bad happens later on.

I would re-seal the tank for good measure as sitting out side is about the worst thing you can do to a tank that isn't filled.

After that just clean the puppy out with some good ol fashioned hose water (make sure to get all the little nooks and cranies. and your good to go :)
