What is the best type of gravel or soil to put on the bottom of a blackwater tank? I heard that porous materials adsorb water components and pigments, is this true? I also want to consider the appearance of the tank.

Most substrates will work just not something that will raise ph. I use aquasoil for my low ph tanks as it buffers. My ph is 6.2. It does take awhile to cycle because it releases ammonia. Once that is done its good to go and great for plants

By aqua-soil, you mean the common type of soil you put in an aquarium, right? Does it not make the water color clear?

Yes it's aquarium substrate, yes water will be clear. If you want the darker colored water use wood and blackwater extract.
