Cool Back In Action, 10G Planted LoTech, 10G Aquaponics Setup

Hello all, it's been a long time since I've logged in. Just wanted to share some updates with you over the last year or so.

I converted my 10G acrylic showcase tank to an aquaponics setup. The...

Re: Cory cat has fungus on his head

Hello Nursepower, you need to have your account approved by an admin to post photos (it's to weed out robots and people trying to sell things).

It could be columnaris, depending on how close to...

Re: Algae and mystery deposits

Looks like diatoms. They should go away on their own after a bit. If you're really annoyed with them, get some otocynclus catfish. They love diatoms.

Re: Protecting My Tank From my Idiot Cats

You could make some loops of tape and stick them to the top of the tank so the cats won't climb up there. I've heard of people doing this on kitchen counters to keep cats off the counters.

Re: Peppered Corys Can’t Swim

Once you have your aquarium nitrogen cycle under control (Google "Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle" and educate yourself on the cycle a little bit), you could work on the swim bladder issue your cories seem...

Re: what ferts should I use?

I usae SeaChem Flourish as well. Additional fertz in a lo-tech tank will only lead to more algae.

Re: Ph problems

The easiest way to buffer the pH in your tank is to add some baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) during water changes. Consult the almighty Google for dosage amounts.

Re: Never had sand before - input please!

Hello, and welcome to the forum! Let's get started:
1.) You can leave the substrate in for years, as long as you use fertilizer tabs for your plants.
2.) No siphoning required. Your plants` root...

Re: Still a beginner after 2 years!

Hello, and welcome to the hobby, as well as the forum!

The pH stabilizer, I'm sorry to say, is a waste of money. It's a phosphate additive that artificially buffers the pH, while at the same time...

Re: Revival

Welcome! The only media you'll need for your filter is some foam/floss material as mechanical filtration, and some ceramic bio-media. You can use carbon if you want, but if you ever decide to have...

Re: New in this

You can use plant food now, and I'm pretty sure you're good to add fish. Only add 2 to 3 fish at a time, otherwise you might cause a mini cycle. If the fish show signs of stress, change 50% of the...

Re: New Member and need help with what fish to add

You could add some corydoras catfish, but other than that I would leave it be. Fish are happier when they're not crammed in too much.

Re: Water Changes

With a 10 gallon, I would do 10% to 50% weekly, depending on how many plants you have in there. More water changed for fewer plants. Get a Home Depot 5 gallon Homer all-purpose bucket and a gravel...

Re: Depressed Fish Are Not a Myth

Yes, my best friend and his girlfriend (now wife) had a betta bowl and weren't good on water changes, so the betta nearly died. Found them a 5 gallon full setup on Craigslist for $40 and now he's a...

Re: Stocking Ideas

I think you're fine to get the gouramis. Just make sure they don't fight with each other or anyone in the tank. Typically gouramis are best in a 1 male - 2 female ratio.

Re: New project - need ideas.

For a tank that big, you could go for an Amazon River biotope. That would be a school of angelfish, a plecostimus or two, some apple snails/golden mystery snails, Amazon swords, vals, and lots of...

Re: Betta fish lying on side and "gasping" after water change?

Also, have you ever thought about a filter and a heater for the poor guy? Bettas are almost always neglected, people think they do just fine in jars with no other life support systems. They are...

Re: Some platys showing red gills

Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate aren't the only chems that can be harmful to your fish, just the most common ones.

When you upset the substrate after not messing with it for a long time, you can...

Re: 75 Gallon Restart (questions)

1.) A regular dish sponge is fine as long as it's BRAND NEW and has no soap scum in/on it;
2.) Yeah, might want to replace that;
3.) They're VersaTops, Dr. Foster & Smith online pet vendor carries...

Re: Sick Danio (Septicemia?)

I would only dose one type of medication at a time, but honestly it sounds like your danio should be quarantined or euthanized. If it's internal issues, the chances of survival are pretty minimal,...

Re: Red streaks on my goldfish fins? Treatment advice please?

I would keep on the water changes and the parasite treatment, but don't add another medication to the tank as some meds don't play well together. Fight your battles one at a time. Also, if the...
