My first tank!

Progress on my first tank. It's a 36 gal & I decided to go with sand. I plan to put some driftwood in the middle & probably more plants. I filled it up tonight & turned the filter on for the first time. I figured I'd test the water in a few days. Opinions/suggestions?

Re: My first tank!

Thanks Summer! Definitely going to add more plants. I didn't want to overdo it at the petshop so I only bought a few. I still need a good piece of driftwood. I'm going to start cycling tonight, just need to pick up some ammonia and test strips.

This may sound like a really stupid question, but I haven't had a tank since I was a kid. I remember having goldfishautolinker.com autolinking image and cleaning the filter every so often. Back then, with 25 cent goldfishautolinker.com autolinking image, we didn't worrying about cycling or consistent water changes. So my question is, does cleaning the filter ruin your cycle/bacteria? What about when it's time to replace your filter cartridge?

Re: My first tank!

HOnestly I dont mess with my filter very often, if it looks gunky always rinse in used tank water never tap water as the chlorine will kill the nitryfying bacteria. I hope you're going to get some live plants too, right? :D

Re: My first tank!

Thanks, that's what I was wondering.
I've considered live plants, I know they're beneficial. But I have this weird thing where I HATE the color green... I know that's weird, right? So possibly, if I could find plants in other colors...

Re: My first tank!

Of course you can, plants come in all different colors. The only other color plant I know if is red and they are a bit more demanding. Do you just hate a certain shade of green? Or the entire variations of green?

Re: My first tank!

Pretty much all shades. The only shades I can tolerate are "sea" colored: seafoam, aqua, etc.

No offense to anyone with planted tanks, but too much green reminds me of a pond, and aesthetically, that's just not the route I want to go.

Re: My first tank!

I have a planted tank and you hurt my plants feelings! They are crying so much :(. They may never stop crying. I hope your happy.lol But anyway, I think you may be able to find some plants that you'll like. It'll just take some time.

Re: My first tank!

lol nooooo I'm sorry. I'm sure your tanks are beautiful. I'm just not a green person. I blame it on the horrible pine colored carpet and the olive green tile in my bathrooms that I got stuck with when I bought my house 5 years ago. Looking at it every day ruined me for all greens.

Re: My first tank!

Have you guys heard of the stuff you can get at the petstore that is supposed to instantly cycle your tank? It's a liquid that says it already has bacteria/nitrates. Opinions?

Re: My first tank!

I'd never trust bacteria in a bottle. .

as for plants, you can find them in nice shades of yellow, orange, red, and yes many shades of green haha

Re: My first tank!

There's only a couple stuff that has true bacteria like Dr Tims one and only and I believe it was tetra safe start. But you have to check the expiration date. That and seachem stability works but that you have to dose for 7 days in a row. It says you can add fish any time while your dosing but I would still jut do the 7 days with ammonia and then add on 8th day.

Tank looks nice but with no live plants you just really have to watch your time with the tank lights. Algae will come on fast with nothing to absorb it. That and really go light on the fish food. Was a big diffrence between my old tanks with all plastic stuff and with my other tanks with plants.

Re: My first tank!

Tested my ph for the first time. Extremely high (8.4). I knew it would be high, I have weird city water, but I didn't think it'd be that high. Should I buy something to lower it?

Re: My first tank!

Thanks chillwill! It is the seachem stability. I'm not in a huge rush, since I was planning on it taking 5+ weeks anyway. I just saw this stuff & thought if there's something that cycles it's quickly, why isn't everyone using it?! Lol

Does it really work I don't know. But I have a planted tank so that sucks up most of the ammonia nitrite and nitrate. I still fish less cycle with either shrimp or just fish food like I did this time. I just buy the smaller bottle and use it when I add fish just for extra precaution. Do I need it probably not does it help maybe but it can't hurt. But I also was adding 12 fish at once. Granite I used established media from a 2 yr old tank in my canister filter to kick start the bacteria too.

Like I said if you where already doing fish less with the ammonia why not try and test each couple times a day for the first 7 days if you have time and let everyone know if it really works. To me I trust seachem alot. I'm starting to buy the prime too once I finish my api conditioner plus stress coat. I just bought that cause it was on sale and with holidays I was just being cheap. But I was double dosing the.api to be sure.
