Filter suggestions for 20g (24x12 high) non-HOB??

Hating my Bio-Wheel! Looking for a non-HOB filter option, mainly because I'm going to start planting my tank, and read a lot about the HOB creating too much surface disturbance and CO2 loss. Looking at Fluval U3 internal, but am open to suggestions and advice. My LSF (not PetSmart or PetCo!) see dollar signs when you talk filtration so I don't entirely trust their advice on this one.

Really liking the 3-stage filter on the Fluval Edge because I don't need to add Purigen for crystal clear water. If my tank is too small for an internal or cannister, I'd probably go with the AquaClear A-600. Though, I had good luck with a Whisper on a 10-gallon for years...

Also, how long would you recommend running both filters at once since the good bacteria lives in the Bio-Wheel? Thanks!

Eheim makes ECCO canister filters but they may be a little much for a 20g. You'd need to look at their specs, but believe some are suited for smaller tanks. Could always go with a sponge filter.

I have and ECCO canister in my 20 long and I love it. It's quiet and keeps the water crystal clear.

20 gallon long:Amazon Swords, Ruffle Swords, Red Flame Swords, Fanwort, Wisteria,8 Lemon tetras,
6 otos, 11 Amano shrimp, 3 mystery snails, 3 Bolivian Rams, 3 black skirt tetra and 2-3 lemon tetra fry
10 gallon: 30 lemon tetra fry, give or take...1 gallon Anubias, Fish: 1 betta

Thanks for the feedback! Right now keeping 5 black skirt tetras and 2 panda corys in the 20 high, working slowly to 7 tetras and 3 pandas and soon going to add plants. I've read a few comments about the 20 longs being okay with the ECCO or the Fluval U3, but I'm wondering if the lengths of tanks, not the volume, make the more powerful filters suitable.

Don't know much about sponge filters now, but will definitely read up!

The 20 long has the same floor space as a 29...
