Rena/API Filstar MX

I chucked my Rena/API Filstar MX filter in the trash. It absolutely would not seal and damn near flooded my room twice. Today, it did it again, after repeated tries to seal it properly. I kept the thing in a tupperwear container because it was so unreliable. When I called technical support the first time it kept leaking, they were of no help, and the guy kept interrupting me and even got mad at me when I told him to let me finish describing everything.

Getting ready to head to the store to buy a new filter system. This time I believe I will get a Fluval system. They seem to be the industry standard.

Depends on the filter your going to buy. But, Im betting you going to spend to much for just a name, thats no different than the rest.

I have personally used these and they are just as good as the name brands. And QUIET.

Re: Rena/API Filstar MX

I went ahead a bought Fluval for up to 70 gallons for my 50 gallon aquarium and installed it. It was about $30 or so more than what I paid for the Rena/API one. It has a much more sturdy clamping system, and a larger rubber gasket to seal the top on. It has been running for an hour now, and thus far the outside of the filter is dry as a bone. I am very disappointed in the Rena/API filter... it was a waste of $130 and the cost of media I had bought for regular changes. It has been the most frustrating experience of my aquarium hobby.

I looked into it. Thanks. One of my big issues was finding a replacement filter ASAP since the other was no good anymore so buying something online was not a practical option. So I had to make do with what was available at the stores here. My water is very cloudy going 24 hours without the filter working. Hopefully it will clear up here in a day or two and the nitrogen cycle will correct itself.

Re: Rena/API Filstar MX

Just to update this thread after a few months... Fluval is still working flawless. It stays sealed and is easy to maintain without a huge water mess. It is also cheaper to maintain it monthly I have found as replacement foam and charcoal cost less overall. I am very happy with the purchase.

I hope this thread helps with those who are looking for canister filters.
