Setting up tank for rainbow darters

I have a 20-long tank that I want to use to keep and breed rainbow darters. Looking for suggestions.

At the moment I'm considering using two bio-wheel filters and an air stone for current control. What should I do about substrate? Rocks on PFS? What kind of rocks? Appreciate any advice

Re: Setting up tank for rainbow darters

I would use the filter and air combo you suggest. I would aquascape by making the bottom substrate from tiny gravel and pool filter sand to start. I would make the bottom uneven like the side of a natural gravel bar starting high and in the middle a deep raceway. Then take natural stones, from the garden shop or lowes, ect.. and make some rock out croppings. The darters will sit on the rocks for the most part and should be easy to see. Just remember no heater.

In my experience, darters love baby brine shrimp and micro worms. You may need to get at least 2-3 small fish to clean up leftovers.

Re: Setting up tank for rainbow darters

Thanks for the aquascaping advice. Ambient temp in my house is about 70 F, and I assume that's where the aquarium temp will stabilize. Is that too warm for rainbow darters? If so, any suggestions?
