Hello, Please help me identify this large cichlid

Hello,

This fish was purchased from Big Als in my hometown and I was told it was an "original Parrot Cichlid". However when investigating that fish title it appears that they are mainly green. This fish is not green. More along the lines of rainbow colorings. It has teeth that can be seen and is about 12" long. He/She is quite substantial. I have had the fish in the tank for about two weeks and after not getting along with an Oscar at all (literally biting chunks off of him)(I removed the Oscar and gave him a new home at Big Als) this fish is co-habitating quite well with the other tankmates. At first he didn't eat a lot of the flakes and pellets that I feed mainly. I tried some lettuce a few days ago and he gobbles that up quick well if that helps with the identification. This is one of my first postings here after reading a lot in the past over the last few years.

Any identification help is truly appreciated. I myself don't think that this is an "original Parrot Cichlid" .

Re: Hello, Please help me identify this large cichlid

I found one picture that resembles your fish listed as a parrot fish;
AOL Search
One must remember that I believe all parrot cichlids are a man made hybrid(someone correct me if I am wrong?),and actuall appearance could be different from fish to fish.Maybe only the blood parrots are the hybrid,I have never kept either so can't say,but I have always been curious how they always get the same result from two different fish!
at first glance I thought flowerhorn, but the fins are different,so I wonder myself.
As slow as I was to notice the difference in fins from the flower horn I just noticed that the parrot fish has 1 long continuos dorsal also,so I don't think it is a parrot.Unless the dorsal is split due to injury or illness this may help us search a little better.

Re: Hello, Please help me identify this large cichlid

Thanks for your response coralbandit,

The dorsal fin is supposed to be all one (I believe). it appears that it was damaged in the past although I cant say for sure.

However, I own a blood red parrot fish and the blood red and this fish are NOTHING alike. Blood red has the characteristic mouth and this guy has fairly large teeth and a completely different mouth.

I am not trying to disagree with you as at least you are offering your help, but if this was the same breed of fish it would amaze me. He really is drastically different from my blood red.

If I have misunderstood you I apologize. I am still new to all this aquarium stuff. I have been at it for about 18months.

Look into folwerhorns if you think the fin is damaged. It was really the way I was leaning.
AOL Search
They do come in many colors so it is more body shape I'm looking at.

Re: Hello, Please help me identify this large cichlid

Thanks Tike and Coralbandit for your help.

I think you hit the nail on the head Tike.

It appears to be a Cichlasoma bifasicatum (Red spotted cichlid)

The info I have read appears to be right on about this fish. I believe it is a female.
