Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

Hi guys. I just started cycling my 55g to upgrade my two angels and three bronze corys into. I am trying to figure out what else I would like to put in with them. I am considering 1 keyhole cichlid or a pair of Bolivian Rams with a school of rummynose tetras. Has anyone tried these fish together? All of my fish are young, the angels are only silver dollar sized(money not the fish ;)) and my cories are all 1-1 1/2" long.

Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

I have one angel with about 9 rummys so those should be OK together. No experience with keyholes or rams with these others.

I have angels ,cories ,rummynose and GBR in my 180g and they don't bother each other.I have cardinals also but they are large as far as cardinals go.Having a good sized school is the key to some tetras as they feel safer and make a "harder to hit" target for other fish.Angels are tough(regardless of the name!).

Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

I have found Keyholes to be the most mild mannered of all cichlids. I have kept them with all manner of small fish and never had a problem. Even though they are substantially more massive than Angelfish, I would worry more about the Angels. Don't think it would be a problem though - I never found Angelfish aggressive - just hungry. Rams of any flavor would be fine too.

What about Blue Acaras - the smaller nicer version of the Green Terror? Or one of my favorites - Festivums!

Of course, Apistos would be nice..... and on and on and on....

Keyholes are great fish and Angels and Keyholes together are a classic combination that should work well for you.

Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

I was thinking about blue acara too. This may be shallow but since I've never seen one in person I am not sure I'll like the way it looks. Neither of my angels have gorgeous coloration, I picked them for their personalities.(although I think my koi will be pretty once he's bigger than a quarter) and I want some standout fish too. Apistos are gorgeous but so expensive everywhere I have seen them. Maybe I'm just nitpicking :-/

Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

I have 2 Bolivian Rams, 2 Rummy Nose, and 2 Long Fin Angels in a 29g. The angels are also about siver dollar size. All get along just fine except the two rams. The larger one(male) keeps the smaller (female) confined to the other side of the tank. It is pretty funny to watch. He doesn't harm her and he won't go to her side.

Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

Angels, keyholes are fine together and with the tetras. If you do rams, set them up a nice rock formation to defend on one end of the tank or the other. That way they will claim part of the tank and most likely won't bother the others if they stay at top ot high mid water over their turf. If the rams spawn, all bets are off.

Thumbs down Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

Thanks for the advice about the rams Henningc. I think I'll stick with the Keyholes since if the rams did spawn a 55 may not be big enough for everything else to be confined to one side. I was a little worried about territoriality with them and the Cory's anyway since they occupy the same space. Thank you everyone for the help! If you have any advice about any of the fish please share. I'm still fairly new to this and all I've kept are angels and Corys.

Re: Angels and Keyholes/Bolivian Rams?

I have never kept them with angels but, I have kept Blue Rams, keyholes and a Blue Acara together before. The acara was much bigger than any of the others and seemed to like to protect the smaller cichlids. All were very peaceful. The only thing with the Acara is they apparently dirty the water very quickly with some sort of secretion.
