Fluval 406 canister issue

So I purchased a Fluval 406 canister filter and set it up yesterday. I set it up with all the parameters listed. The bottom of the canister is 4' from the top of the water. The hoses are not straight but as smooth as I could get them, no kinks. The bubbler is away from the intake hose.

I set it up and it worked really good. Then overnight it started rattling. The pump is still moving water, but in fits and starts. I primed it again and it does not help. No bubbles are coming out of the outtake hose. If I unplug it a bit it and start it again it gets back to normal, then within an hour or two it starts to rattle again. I took it apart, the impeller is seated, and the action is good. I put everything back, restarted it, and it did it again.

I currently have it unplugged so I don't damage it.

Any ideas?

I would check all the seals, intake, where the lid snaps down etc. It sounds like you have a small air leak somewhere on the intake side which is allowing it to slowly build up air inside the tank which will cause the issues you describe.

Re: Fluval 406 canister issue

I have the same issue with my 306. I can't seem to get the top to lock down well after the last cleaning. I opened it again and checked it, cleaned the top a little better, thinking maybe I didn't put it back together right... but can't locate where the issue might be. Could it be the hoses? And if so, how would I know for sure? Would they be leaking? I've let it run like this for a couple weeks now, because I don't know what else to do, but it seems to be cycling less and less water.

We are new to the aquarium thing... bought this one from a neighbor who set it up for us. We learned the hard way about how to clean the filter. He said he had only recently bought the Fluval, but I'm doubting that it's actually big enough for the aquarium. What issues might arise if that's the case? When I measured the tank and looked up how many gallons it must hold... I came up with over 100 gals. But this is just a 306. It's been doing a good job until recently.

Re: Fluval 406 canister issue

I called the company and they send me a new part, basically the lid that snaps on. I also needed the water level to be a good three inches above the hose connection for the intake-the end of that black ribbed hose has to be 3 inches below the water. In my house the water evaporates pretty quickly in the winter so it had gone down just enough to effect the pump.

The 306 only handles 70 gallons, so you may need a larger filter. Depends on how many fish and plants you have.

You can call Fluval, their customer service was great.
