Hi, I have a small 3 gallon cube. I have Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum gravel, a large piece of driftwood, that takes up about 20-35 percent of the tank. My ph keeps drifting downwards to 5 ish, and killing the shrimp in it. Water change brings it back up. I am using ro di water. Any suggestions?
How long has the wood been in there? Wood leeches tannins and will lower the ph easily. Are you using straight RO? you need to add some dechlored tap to, or something to add the minerals back, so it can buffer. Otherwise the RO water and driftwood will allow crashes easily.
The easiest way to buffer the pH in your tank is to add some baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) during water changes. Consult the almighty Google for dosage amounts.
