Mini Cycle? and Problems with Neons

So my tank finally finished cycling. 20 gallon marineland halfmoon. Not knowing any better I cycled with 5 neon tetras. One died within days of being added before any toxins built up in the tank (LFS checked the water and refunded the fish) and one died about two weeks in, likely from ammonia spike. But 3 made it through the cycle. I did a 25% water change the weekend before the cycle completed to lower nitrites and try and save the remaining fish. After the cycle was complete I added 3 more neon tetras (6 total) and 2 fancy male guppies, and an assassin snail. This was last Saturday. Again one of the tetras died in less than 3 days and another one this morning, both had been kind of hiding before their demise. After losing two fish I tested the water an Ammonia = 0.5ppm, Nitrites = 0, Nitrates = 5 ppm. Didn't check the pH but it has consistently been ~pH=7.6.

Questions,
1) With some ammonia being present after previously reading 0 is my tank going into a mini cycle, if so why?
2) Am I doing something wrong or are neons really that weak and susceptible to neon tetra disease

Thanks for the feedback.

It's probably not NTD but they are sensative. You are having mini cycle I would guess, but with nitrAtes present I would just change water(daily if necessary) to lower your ammonia to less than.25
Although I keep similiar fish and discusautolinker.com autolinking image in the same pH as you I would caution that a very slow drip acclimation is necessary if they come from a lower pH.They prefer lower but can be adjusted, this must be done gently and slowly.I take hours(2 or more) to acclimate my discusautolinker.com autolinking image.

I agree. Never could keep Neons until I learned how to acclimatize fish on this site. Within 2 weeks most, if not all, would be dead. Took me almost 3 hours to add 4 Neons to my tank yesterday.

Re: Mini Cycle? and Problems with Neons

I saw the post on drip acclimatization. What I have done in the past (as per LFS):
1) Turn off light
2) Float bag with fish for 15 min
3) Add some tank water (been adding 1 cup ~1/2-1/3 of original water volume
4) Float 15 minutes
5) Add tank water (again 1 cup)
6) Float 15 minutes
7) Net and add fish
8) Leave light off another 30-60min
9) skip feeding that night

Is this still just acclimating the tetras too fast? And the tetras really seemed to be fine for the first day they immediately schooled with the old tetras and stayed together before dying off. But if everyone agrees that dripping is the way to go then that is what I will do. How much do you need to drip? Equal volume of original water? 2x? Thanks again

Re: Mini Cycle? and Problems with Neons

I place new fish in a 2 qt. plastic paint pail(clean and new) and place that bucket in a 5 gallon bucket.I use air line hose with either a control valve or I tie it in a not to drip like a drip every couple seconds. In like an hour the 2 qt. bucket is overflowing into 5g.I either let it overflow till water in 5g is close to top of smaller bucket or sometimes I dump half of little bucket(with fish in it) and let it keep going longer.More sensative fish(possibly neons{I have cardinals)) I drip for a total at least one hour ,my discusautolinker.com autolinking image or cards at least 2.I do this process for my salts.Slow changes are best.
