How many times a day do you feed?

I like to feed 3 times a day. More often if I have discusautolinker.com autolinking image fry. What do y'all do?

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

fry tanks I would feed at least 3 times a day but the other tanks once a day.

SUCCESS IS MEASURED BY YEARS, NOT MONTHS!!!
220 Tank build + 62 other tanks.

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

Hello Liz...

I feed a good amount of flakes, freeze dried, frozen and pellets/wafers, just once a day. My tanks are fairly large and I always have fry in the tank. But, feeding multiple times daily will affect the water chemistry, because not everything is eaten right away. The fish get their exercise foraging for leftovers and my tanks stay cleaner.

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

Twice a day for adult tanks , three times a day for juveniles and up to six times a day depending on the fry.

Depends on how heavily that you feed.

Fry don't eat a lot at each feeding, so they grow better with multiple feedings during the day. and with small fry, it's prudent to tidy up the uneaten food.

Fish are accustomed to eating throughout the day, not gorging themselves on one a single meal. Bloating and bowel problems can be increased immensely.

and...while when feeding heavily once a day, even if they forage, not all the food gets eaten, and the food will break down eventually...then add in the heavy fish waste...if frequent water changes aren't performed, ammonia will build, nitrites/nitrates rise, and you're on the brink of a mini-cyle... imho, smaller more frequent feedings allow all(most/more) of the food to be consumed and avoids any water issues. Any, by chance, uneaten food is minimized and is eaten by foragers.

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

Hello Mug...

My tanks all have a pretty heavy fish load, so I feed well, so all get some. All tanks get 60 percent water changes weekly, so there's no chance of a build up of wastes before I remove them through the water change. I keep somewhat larger fish, Platys, Swordtails, Plecos and some of the larger Corydoras, plus their fry. As a group, they consume quite a bit of food and multiple, daily feedings with several tanks would become a job in itself.

Everyone must do what works best for them, and their stock......alas, I'm a heavy feeder also.....just more frequently.

I feed a ton of food and change a ton of water. I can't help myself. I cut my teeth on discusautolinker.com autolinking image.

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

Hello Liz...

I may be wrong, but by creating an environment with ample food, the fish respond by breeding often. My Corydoras and Platys especially. In times of plenty, the egglayers produce more eggs and the livebearers seems to produce more fry. The well fed adults show little interest in the fry, so it's entirely possible that more fry survive.

Just a thought.

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

I feed the 55 once a day flake, the featherfins and pleco's will get veggy's on a fork or some algea wafters. with three pleco's no algea exists.

I feed them a small snack later in the day, some times two snacks...

The 35 get fed twice, depending if its there treat day or not.

5 gallon gets fed three to four times heavily. ( 10,000 or more snail tank, + fish, will be upgraded soon*

10 gallon is just baby pleco's and some really small juvi platies, they get fed once a day, as pleco's get algea wafters and two little platies aren't going to honestly eat that much if anything some days lol

Fry I try to get three times a day, I make my own fry food.

Re: How many times a day do you feed?

Bettas x 2 daily
Livebearers x 3-4 flake and live
Inverts x 1

Trick is learn how much the fish will consume before they lose interest and food accumulates on the bottom. I have crayfish or corys in all tanks so the clean up crew is always ready. The other trick is rotate types of food even if it is all flake. My fish love the fact that I rotate through 12 types of food-Ocean Nutrition and Ken's. Mollys and such get greens first than what everyone else is having.
