High nitrate level

I have a 55 gallon tank with about 15 fish all community type tetras and danios. I do at least a 20 percent water change and check my levels and all are good except my nitrates are 160 ppm. How else can I bring them down?

Re: High nitrate level

you can try vodka dosing. it works in freshautolinker.com autolinking image water like it does in saltautolinker.com autolinking image water.

You show me a man who can reliably grow algae and I will show you a man who can reliably grow fish.

Feed the fish a little less and perform larger water changes and your nitrates will drop.

Re: High nitrate level

also, test your tap water. if it has high nitrates, then water changes wont help.

another method for getting rid of nitrates is an algae scrubber.

What removes the excess nutrients brought on by the dosing? Skimmer does it in SW.

bacteria and algae, and eventually the filter. it is kinda the same deal in marine tanks, the skimmer just helps you skip the biofilm/algae part and go right to getting the sequestered form of the nitrates(ie, protein) out of the water.

in a freshautolinker.com autolinking image water tank, you will see biofilm sludge start to accumulate around the walls of the tank at the surface of the water, so i imagine a skimmer would work for freshautolinker.com autolinking image water as well. i have never tried a skimmer on fresh water though. im kinda curious how well that would work. i have seen the areas above air diffusers build up sludge the fastest, so i would bet it would work the same.

Re: High nitrate level

i just looked up protein skimmers on freshautolinker.com autolinking image water tanks to see if anyone was using them. i found this:

so it seems a protein skimmer will work with freshautolinker.com autolinking image water in the same way it does in marine tanks.

Re: High nitrate level

Kinda works I guess, no where near what its supposed to do though.
Wonder what a good skimmer would do. The bubbles in that thing are not really a foam.

perhaps not, but i doubt he is vodka dosing either. either way, it is definitely getting something out.
