Canister filter help again.

Some of you may remember my thread about my canister. For those of you who don't know my canister, it is a marineland canister c360. It is working properly but the flow is now weak and the tubes for the input and the out put are now brown like algae. I think it is algae actually. What should I do?

Re: Canister filter help again.

Check the intake screen first, Usually mine will clog from debris. Remove that ans the flow should be good. Otherwise they sell things to clean the tubes.

Re: Canister filter help again.

Ok so I finally got off my lazy butt and did something, I removed the intake screen and ran it under water, not much came out. And not much is different with the flow, should I take the filter apart? This is actually the 1st time it has stopped shut off since I set it up, even during water changes I made sure it could still run.

Re: Canister filter help again.

You know the tubes running from the filter body to the intake and outflow? Those may need to be cleaned. They make pipe cleaners for those. And you could also take a bucket, fill it with tank water, dissassemble the canister and swish the baskets in that to pull some of the gunk.

Re: Canister filter help again.

If I were to cut off the canister and open the lid of it, would the water come out and onto the floor?

Re: Canister filter help again.

You would have to cut it off and use the shut off valves. Then disconnect the hoses. You can youtube a how to on cleaning the filter. It should be handy.

Re: Canister filter help again.

If the tubes are your issue and given the relatively short time you have had it, do yourself a favor and get rid of it. I have cleaned tubes once in all of my canisters (big and small) one time in almost 6yrs. Remove your impeller and clean it and the housing. If cleaning the tubes still doesn't improve then it may be your impeller needing to be replaced.

Re: Canister filter help again.

I'm betting the media is clogged, not the tubes. They will foul but shouldn't really clog per se.

Re: Canister filter help again.

Filter pads maybe? Even big ass filters like a FX5 can be taken down by clogged pads.

Re: Canister filter help again.

Well I have a pic of the tubes here. Does anybody know of something I could get to clean them with?
