Craigs List is a good spot to look for cheaper used tanks and equipment.

Re: starting first sw on a budget

Yup, Craigslist is your friend. All of my tanks have come from there.

10 gallon fresh setup with 1 giant danio, 3 placos, and 1 guppie.
30 gal bare bottom QT
55 gallon salt setup with a bunch of crabs and snails. false perc clown, diamond goby, lawnmower blenny, a green mandarin, and 1 cleaner shrimp. And a few corals
180 gallon acrylic not setup yet. (Need a few more things before it gets filled with water.)
Tanks not setup, 10, 30, 55 with stand. Either 30 or the 55 will be the sump for the 180

Re: starting first sw on a budget

I recommend you simply start the tank with a partition so that a small poart of the display is a refugium for macro algaes.

IMHO the algae will keep the tank for you with little need for much more.

Re: starting first sw on a budget

I have a 29gal tank and just bought a used refugium for $80. I did not measure the space it would need to fit in and now I am looking to get a smaller one. Would you like to purchase mine from me for $80? I'll pay cost of shipping it to you. It is exactly like this one in the medium size except the outflow is piped instead of the waterfall. It's in very good condition and I cleaned it up so that the only scale is inside the piping. Let me know if you are interested! CPR AquaFuge 2 Hang-on Refugium
