Hi my name is Joe. My wife and I have a new found interest in fish. We have set up a tall 30 gallon glo tank with AquaClear 50 filter. We have had a wild ride so far. We got the tank and accessories from Petco. They recommended we buy quick start and stress coat to cycle the water. They said bring us a sample in 2 days. We did they said everything looks good and told us 8 fish. 3 neon green long fin tetra, 3 neon red long fin tetra, and 2 dalmatian mollies. We did the whole wait 20 minutes with bag floating before putting fish in. We put the fish in, everybody looks good and we thought we were all set. We were so wrong, we woke up 6-8 hours later and 5 of 8 were dead. We packed up all the fish and brought them back for a refund. We took a water sample to a country store that sells fish and among alot if other things. They ran the thier test, said our ph, ammonia, and nitrates were 9ff the charts bad. They recommended ph down and leave the tank alone for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks the ammonia was down to nothing, they recommended we buy 6 tiger barbs and 6 rosey barbs, since they are hearty fish they will help us with the whole cycling process. They said do not touch anything for 4 weeks, bring them a water sample and whatever fish are still alive for a refund. If the water sample comes back correctly, we will be able to buy the fish that we want. It's been 5 days, everyone is still alive, so far so good. Me and wife were surprised just the setup process of the tank took this long. Does anyone have any other recommendations for us, since we are so new at this?
