Attention - Password and Security Update

Hey all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

This sounds great and all, but why have to change your password every year, why not twice a year like Fish Forums has its members do? Or every three months? Just a suggestion, because then it will keep unwanted people from hacking into members accounts. I know of one such person who has tried to hack into my account on Fish Forums, he was caught, but the fact that he tried to hack into my account is reason enough to either have people change their passwords twice a year or every three months, instead of once a year. Not trying to undermine anyone, just making a suggestion on keeping everyone's account safe on here and Fish Forums.

My opinion on this change for the passwords on Fish Forums is that it should just be left alone, kept as it is right now with changing the password twice a year. Heck, I would gladly change my password every three months if I could, so that no one can hack into my account on Fish Forums.

Fish are family, not just pets.

The 366 days is what we are suggesting, it is best to change any password you have on a yearly basis, to keep your accounts safe from potential issues on our site and others. We can revisit this at a later date and see if we need to make changes to the amount of time required to pass before a change.

Thanks for the feedback!
