Re: URGENT statement from aquariumforum.com *PLEASE READ*

Cichlid keepers tend to have the overkill cranked up with filtration but as a cichlid keeper and breeder its a very much needed thing to do. Although they arent as dirty as goldies are as far as bioload is concerned we still at a bare minimum turn our water over atleast 10x per hour.

The statement is correct to an extent about the numbers of fish of the same main family. Africans such as labido's love the numbers because they feel safer and that just comes from natural instinct,(we all know our fish bloodlines all started wild less parrots) discusautolinker.com autolinking image need the numbers as do most angels however a tank full of firemouths or terrors will cause the water to turn red and dingy real fast. Some fish arent meant to always be fighting over who is dominant they fight to the death and there is no compromise to them its just natural, you just really need to do deep research on any kind of fish you plan on keeping.

Re: URGENT statement from aquariumforum.com *PLEASE READ*

In my experience. there is a difference between overstocking and overcrowding. Overstocking is when you do not have the proper space or filtration t handle your bio-load. Over crowding is when you have enough filtration, but you have a smaller space. Both of them are obviously bad, but sometimes cichlid owners have to slightly over crowd to help with aggression. Now when someone has an oscar in a 20gal or keeps bala sharks in a 55 is where I draw the line.

I was wondering if anyone had any information on breeding fighting fish for profit?

Just kidding! These are good rules to run by, no one should want to see fish or any other animal being mistreated, especially promote it.

Just to play devils advocate... then why are there so many posts helping out on fish-in cycling when everything about it harms the fish! Or is it ok because they are just tetras or mollies or other "cheap" fish?

Its not ok no matter what fish you have. However if they already have the fish then its best for them to get good advice to better the environment for the inhabitants and make the cycling process as painless as possible.

Perhaps because some people have already made the mistake of getting fish right away without knowing they should cycle the water. They come here after things are going bad looking for help. They already have the fish and are trying to save them. The only way to do that is to get the water cycled.

Agree it is best if they are in that situation when they come looking for help, but many posts especially in the last month or so have been telling people just starting their tanks that they have an option of fish-in or fishless so if our policy is what I hope you say it is then I would hope this would be corrected when posted. Most of these posts deal with the bacteria in a bottle miracle lol.

If you read who the posters are most of them done it that way and see nothing wrong with loosing a few fish during/because of cycling. I am from the old school and know how to do it, but I don't advise anyone to cycle with fish, for one reason it may not hurt the fish then but in the long run it does.

The bacteria in a bottle is a whole nother ball game to me. I dont trust it, nor suggest it to anyone. Some people dont see an issue with fish in cycling but most of the staff here recommend fishless cycling, as does most of the more experienced members.

My original question was meant to ask if recommending fish-in cycling fell under this "rule\law"

To me it should but for the fact that people have done it since the start of keeping fish in glass boxes we really can't put it into that catagory. To many old school fish keepers swear by it. Fishless cycling really hasn't been around that long considering how long people have been keeping fish.

Re: URGENT statement from aquariumforum.com *PLEASE READ*

the bacteria in a bottle thing should be used as a tool, and not taken for granted. i have tested it and can tell you that what i used worked, but there is no way to know if the bacteria in the bottle you find at the local pet-whatnot is even alive anymore. i have seen them work great and had them not work at all. it can cycle a tank in a week, but you will never know if you dont test the water every day to see what the levels are doing.

even so, the initial cycle from bottled bacteria is a bit unstable. by nature, if it cycles your tank, the tank WILL go through a mini-cycle(slight imbalances) as soon as the original level of ammonia that was present drops off. the same thing happens with artificially dosing with ammonia if you suddenly stop dosing all at once. the tank will usually recover just fine, but its something to keep in mind.

ok, ill get off the soap box now...

Breeding-
Breeding your fish is not a way to make a profit unless you are properly set up.Please do not come to us saying you wish to breed this fish for this reason without doing proper research on the species of fish and getting all the supplies needed first. While babies will happen in some tanks please understand we do not promote it for profit, and being improperly setup will cause more harm to the fish than good.

Re: URGENT statement from aquariumforum.com *PLEASE READ*

I am Agree .
But you must also see other things. The development of the aquaristk in the region.
In '70 we had every 14 days at the club more than 100 members. We went in winter on ice holes sometimes 10 men . Now I am almost alone, and I 'm interested in that young people be interested .
These fish must be enough in the store. They must be cheap.
The old man says to the grandson : We take 10 beautiful fish with. They are only 0.60 cents. Again, a young aquarist was won! Maybe ?
In particular, killifish . The one sees only rarely today. If nobody does that , go to the lost.
Previously we had many kinds , for example, Nothobranchius .
The dealers were with the club. We were a fish stronghold.
But there was a rule : Shopping +100 % = sale .
Thus, the fish were still cheap and it was a lot more buyers .
And one other thing : Thanks to the successful breeding the right keeping is proven!
With killies could not be otherwise . The need to be bred . otherwise the next year off .
The may also not be available for 8 in the store, otherwise they will die there! ( The breeder has had the for 1 sold). Then you will be able to there not resell. And you might also breed no more. the kind is lost here. And where else might also. In nature, these are sometimes no longer available. I am of the opinion: Who can breed Killies to do it necessarily, and try to distribute them. One must think of the whole. The money is secondary.
You can clearly see where the fault lies .
And lastly, if I want to expand , buy better equipment , drive Car far into the food , then it is easier for me if a little money is coming . No one here has grown rich from water changes. The proceeds is usually less than the simple reproduction.
Please do not me understand bad

A lot of things I do not know. Learning has no end

This frustrates me. If you choose a fishless cycle great, I think it is the best way to go for many. Having said that you can do a fish in cycle if done correctly and if the forum wants to ban people from stating that or instructing someone on how to do it correctly then I think you are just becoming exclusive and will lose members. JMO. I have done cycling both ways successfully .

If someone buys a tank and sets it up I would not advise fish in cycle, but if they have already purchased fish I would advise a good test kit and plenty of water changes. I wouldn't advise bacteria in a bottle to cycle as that is an iffy solution.

But I don't think a person will be banned for fish in cycle unless it was done with the intention of hurting the fish purposely. There are some people that way in the world. Not much different than breeding and raising fish just to fight. It's a cruel hobby there.
