Re: German Blue questions

Any cichlid can be called egg eaters. If a pair eats their spawn break them up but not before the third spawn. Maturity sometimes improves parenting and decreases spawn cannibalism. Separating fry from parents with a partition in the tank will sometimes help to mature the parents. Poor genetics from inbreeding also contributes to spawn predation. Choose parents as close to show quality as possible, better looking fish generally have better genetics. And try to find brood stocks from several different sources to improve genetic diversity. Another problem that most people do not know about is the use of sex hormones to "pretty up" sales stocks. The hormones do permanent damage to most females. I have dissected dead females with varying stages of male sex organ development and the hormonal imbalance renders eggs useless. Fish normally pick out infertile eggs to control fungal development.
