Came Back today to find my cleaner shrimp laying on the sand looking very weak something is deffinatly wrong, not sure what but it could have something to do with all the algea that had accumulated, green hairy algea and spots of redish - brown algea. I plan on doing a water change today. Can anyone help me figure out whats going on.

Can you give a little more info'? Did you leave the lights on the whole time you were gone? (That would cause algae to grow). Do you have an automatic feeder? (Maybe it malfunctioned and put too much food in the tank, or not enough). Do you have other fish in the tank? (Could have stressed the shrimp out by pecking at them if they were hungry while you were gone). Have you tested the water params since getting home? (If so, what are they?) You left the filter and heater on I'm assuming.
If they are cleaner shrimp, I'd think the heavy algae would be more food for them, not make them sick..... Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you can give a little more info' I can maybe help a bit more. |

My Light is on a timer and I have seen it work, hope it turned off while I was gone. I had a friend feed the fish an appropriate amount. The cleaner shrimp lived (past tense since now the shrimp is dead) with 2 juvenile ocelaris clowns. Have not checked parameters yet but all the corals look great

I'm wondering then, since everything else is fine, if you just have an algae bloom. (Or maybe the friend was a little over-zealous in feeding because they wanted to be sure that they didn't kill the fish?) which could cause an algae or bacterial bloom.
As for the shrimp.... maybe he was old? Was it a baby when you got it? Not sure of the life expectancy of cleaner shrimp. Sorry to hear he died though! It's never easy to loose a tank critter. Will you get more cleaner shrimp? |
