Well....heres another one of those stupid newbies with a question that can not possibly have a specific, CORRECT answer....but if you can offer some opinions...Id be awfully grateful. ![]() I have a 46 gallon bowfront with 60 lbs of live rock & 60 lbs of live sand in its second week of cycling right now. Ive ordered a Reef Octopus 2000skimmer, EcoTech MP10w, and Ecoxotic lighting. I currently have a 3X UV sterilizer and a Penguin 350 powerfilter keeping it going until my powerhead and skimmer show up, at which point, I will discard Penguingun 350. My question is related to....(here it comes...the dreaded newbie doesn't know how to do his own math, and is overwhelmed by all of the info readily available....this is gonna be painful) ~~> <~~HOW MANY FISH CAN AN INBRED REDNECK KEEP IN A 46 GALLON TANK??? I know...its a question that requires many relative facts, but Im hoping someone has a general guideline that is simple enough for a douchetard like myself to understand. Here is a list of the fish Id "LIKE" to have: Pair of Maroon Clowns Coral Beauty OR Flame Angel (I would LOVE to keep BOTH...but, yeah, I know...) Dwarf Zebra Lion Flame Hawk Juvie Blue Tang (unfortunately, they dont STAY juveniles) but I would be willing to trade it in every year for a new youngster! Is that mean? Alot of guys do that with their wives, so it cant be any worse to do it to a fish....can it??? I will add some coral after a few months, but nothing too delicate or difficult to keep alive. Ok, sooo.....I asked for it.......tear into me.....Im braced and ready. ![]() Last edited by rogerjrod : 05-25-2012 at 01:12 PM. |

WOW, thats alot of fish. Ok so here goes, lemme give it a shot here. So inch of fish per gallon doesn't work here. You have to look at adult size of fish and swim room needed for said fish. That being said, your list is a bit big. Pair of BIG Maroon Clownfish is tough in a 46, but, can be done. They are nasty mean territorial clownfish, this yoiu will find out. dwarf Angels, either one, no problem there. Zebra Lion, nope, gets to big. Blue Tang, again, I would advise against it, keeping them and then taking them back stressess the bejesus out of them, and they are already ICH prone, not a good idea to do, but its not my tank. And only if it were that easy with fish as it is with our wives, ROFL. There are of course quite a few other fish to choose from.

Thanks Reefer...I did not know Maroon Clowns were jerks....I dont wanna deal with attitudes, I also didnt really do enough research to realize that they get larger than other clowns....Im fine with any clowns with a good disposition. Your favorite?
I had a feeling that it would be like child abuse to steal the youth from a tang and then boot it out of the house once it hits the ripe old age of 11 months!!! I assumed that a dwarf zebra lion would stay relatively small....but just saw that they reach the 5" range.....that IS kinda big for a small tank like mine. Its crap like this that makes people be forced to get more aquariums!!! Dual Dwarf Angels....completely different colors (like a coral beauty and say a lemonpeel)....ya think its possible in a 46? Im sure they would be fine as young'ns...but after a year or so...would it be an all out turf war? |

I like the Black and White Clown fish myself. Very cool coloring to them. As for keeping pygmy Angela in the same tank. Can't do it. You can't keep the same genus of fish in the same tank, even the large angels, unless in a very large system. Its just their nature if not liking each other in close proximity.
Have you looked at the other types of clowns that are out there? There are many out of the norm, very colorful, oh and, very costly too. |

I don't keep salt and just browse through sometimes to learn about things I will never do - so take what I say with a grain of freshwater. But I like the approach of listing possible fish and being specific in questions. It always bothers me when posters ask what fish they should have with no info other than that they know there are fish. A specific posting gets results - the next run to the saltwater section of the lfs will have me looking at maroon clowns with a clearer eye than I had before this thread. Thanks.

The amount of fish kept in a tank is determined by water tests and stress levels. I would only introduce a max of 3 fish at a time when the tank doesnt have any fish. And after that, perform water tests everyday to see where you are at chemistry wise. Take note of their behavior patterns. If they are aggressive, it would be wise not to introduce anymore fish.
