Question Clown Fish

Hi,

Looking for help!! I have a 50 gallon tank. I have several fishes from a blue tang, yellow tang, blemy, etc. My oldest clown fish, which I've had for over a year, is laying at the bottom of the tank. He comes up for feedings and if any fish bothers him - he swims up. He is usually very playful and happy. My other clown fish is not with him and they are usually together. I am really worried since he is the longest fish we've had and he is my favorite. My husband cleaned the canisters this weekend and added water to the tank. The levels as of Sunday were fine. What can I do to save him?

Going to need specifics on the tank to help out.
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
CA
How much Live Rock
Live sand, depth of?
All these questions are asked because noramlly when a tank is well, all the inhabitants thrive. In a tank failing, its the weakest fish that die first.
Note the recommended tank size, and the size of the adult fish:
Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang
Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Yellow Tang - Hawaii

Hi,
We have about 25 to 30 lbs of live rock, about an inch of live sand and the nitrates were a little high. My husband put in a solution to lower the nitrates. Im just so confused since he has survived every change in the tank. He was our starter fish over a year ago. He is friendly and he is the only fish in the tank that we can hand feed. Great fish, I'm hoping I can save him. He seems so depressed. The other clown fish will not go near him anymore.

Male and a Female? Or 2 Females or 2 Males. They may be fighting, and the one took a beating. Maybe. Guessing, with no visible signs of injury. But its not a good thing to see what you are. Not good at all.
What does Nitrates were alittle high mean? Why would you does the tank to lower Nitrates instead of doing Water changes to lower them?

What did your husband dose the tank with? As RM said the best way to lower nitrates is with water changes. How high is the nitrates? What kind of water do you use? Was there any new tank mates added lately? How's the clowns color? Is it eating? Is there any marks on the body? Is it breathing rapidly? OMG i can go on and on

Perhaps he is protecting their eggs and these eggs are cared for by the male.
When the clowns lay their eggs, the male will protect them at all times, caring for each one individually. If he doesn't, then the female will just remove him, and find another mate.

when clowns are put together , there is a sex change thats going to happen..one of them will stay male and the other will change to female..IMO its usually the biggest clown fish that changes..i would never dose anything to bring nitrates down in a saltwater tank..water changes..water changes ..and as im sure someone has already told you ..that tanks not big enough for tangs..they could be picking on the clown fish..as long as it is eating it has a chance..when it quits eating thats not going to be good..you might have to QT him in another tank..i think thats what i would do to see if that brings him out of it..
