Looking good!Whats the specs on the setup?

I noticed you have some ribbon plants in there.Just an FYI,they are non aquatic,so you may need to keep an eye on them for signs of rotting.

Wow guys, thanks for all the encouragement. This tank has actually been more challenging than originally anticipated. The entire set up is technically for one very special fish, which is enroute from Thailand as I write this. The tank is a 10 gallon Half Moon by Marineland, which overall I'm pretty satisfied with. Substrate is plain and simple, salt & pepper colored aquarium gravel studded with fertilizer pellets. So far, the plants I've included are a Java Fern, 2 Amazon Swords, 3 "Umbrella Plants"(However, I believe these were mislabelled by Petsmart, as I've never seen Umbrellas like this), 4 White Ribbon plants, 4 Banana plants, and quite a few Frogbit plants floating at the surface. The wood I've used at the bottom of the tank is Maponi and the branchy stuff is sand blasted Manzanita, with the sharp ends sanded to minimize sharpness. The intended occupant is an HMPK(short-finned w/ half-moon tail) Betta splendens. I'll be sure to post pics of him asap.

Thanks for the heads up about the ribbon plants, and yes I have been watching them. I wanted to do something kind of Asian themed, without building an actual biotope(somehow a biotope seems innapropriate for an orange and purple betta). I chose these bamboo relatives as an alternative to bamboo itself. I haven't decided if they will stay. Looking now, I think one at least has to be pulled...

Sounds good- hope your betta arrives in perfect health! :D Oh, just a heads-up... white ribbon and umbrella plants are terrestrial, not aquatic.

Thanks darlin'! Of this, I am aware(Umbrella Plants are actually 'semi-aquatic'). I find that, provided one is diligent with checking for rot & has the time, they both make nice additions to the home aquaria.

I'll have to ask you for tips, then! I love the way white ribbons look, but never knew that they could be kept under water.

I mean, I wouldn't ever recommend their use to any beginning aquarists but for someone with a little experience it's fairly easy. You just treat them the same way you would reg bamboo(as I think I stated above, ribbon plant is just a common variety of it), that is you'll want to place it where it can be easily observed and pulled if need be. If it looks like it's rotting at the base - toss it. Otherwise just clip any rotten/dead leaves the way you would any plant. I find that gently pulling the plant out from your substrate and rinsing the roots once a week generally prevents any rotting, once the plant has established itself.

I still classify myself as a beginner (I've had a 5 gallon for three months and a 10 gallon for only two weeks), but it sounds easy enough. If I get ambitious, I might try it out!

Sorry... you posted to show off your tank, not to answer my dumb questions!

No worries! Honestly, it kinda makes my obsession with all-things-aquaria seem suddenly useful. My friends and fam are sooo sick of hearing about my fish-craziness! At least here, there are people who like to discuss the matter

Tell me about it! :D My friends are so sick of fish talk, and my family doesn't even listen anymore (though my sister has started paying more attention and wanting her own tank). That's one of the best things about online forums - you know right from the start that you have at least one thing in common with everyone.

Besides, beginners like me always appreciate advice from knowledgeable people like you! And as beginners become more educated about the topic, we can then educate newer people and pass on the helpful information that we've learned. It's a good system.

I find that alot of times, it doesn't matter if people are beginners or not, that just speaking To like-minded people will teach you all kinds of things. I've learned plenty of information on a variety of topics from so-called "beginners." That's partially why I joined this forum, because it helps to keep me educated. A keen eye and discerning mind go a long way, regardless of a persons experience level. Also, people in the aquarium community tend to be overly opinionated(myself included!), and it's good to be reminded that there are other ways.

True, true. Two heads are better than one, as they say!

Though there is a point where some people don't know anything. When I first came here, I really didn't know a thing! After I started learning, I could then discuss things with people more. I'm still a beginner, but I do know a few things. I guess that's what I meant earlier; that knowledge isn't really measured with levels like beginner and expert. Buildup of personal experience is more gradual than can be measured, I think, unless you compare someone who only has a few weeks of experience to someone who has years of experience. In other words, someone who only knows the basics still has a lot to share with someone who doesn't know anything.

Oh, PK's are definitely my favorite as well, of course I love my VT and DT just the same You know, the language barrier is severe so to be honest, I don't recall the fellow's name! His SN is pcbettas, and believe it or not I found him on eBay. I do intend on breeding him, but I really would like to find him an impressive female with which to pair. You all will ne the first to know when the fry do come, promise!

I got duped into buying white ribbons, they are very pretty until they start rotting. Now I'm wondering what else I have in there that is not fully aquatic. Oh well, live and learn,
