How can I introduce the neutral regulator to my established and stocked aquarium without stressing the fish by dropping the ph too quickly?

Should I just slowly introduce it by using a little bit in a partial water change and then keep doing water changes with the neutral regulator in every other day or so?

Thanks for the comments jrodriguez!

jeb88,
You can use the Neutral Regulator in smaller doses if you are concerned about dropping the pH too quickly. However, depending on how high your pH is currently and what your dKH (carbonate alkalinity) is, you may have difficulty getting it to 7.0 in the first couple of doses anyway. It is a good idea to know where your carbonate hardness level is because this will ultimately determine how fast the pH drops. Additionally, if your carbonate hardness is high, you may need to use Acid Buffer to cut down the carbonates and lower the pH initially, then use the Neutral Regulator in order to stabilize the pH at 7.0 and buffer the water. Neutral Regulator is a phosphate-based buffering system that is very good at maintaining the pH, but it must first overcome the buffers that are likely already in the water column (carbonates).

If your carbonate hardness is high, Acid Buffer will work to lower it while lowering the pH and make it easier for Neutral Regulator to do its job.

If your carbonate hardness is low (less likely to be the case since your pH is high), then Neutral Regulator will adjust the pH near 7.0 very effectively and quickly. If this is the case, then I would start with a 1/2 dose of the Neutral Regulator, then test the pH and see where it was adjusted to then dose as necessary.

Hopefully this was helpful
