OK, I am trying to figure if I can do a SW tank. My last post/question was regarding the water. Problem solved, the Petc* near me sells it in 5gallon jugs. I know I will need live rock and sand. My question is the sand, is it possible to use pool filter sand? Will this turn live?

Well I say this tongue in cheek,. but this is what it is. Don't go cheap in SW if you want to enjoy it.
One I would say get an RO/DI filter and make your own water as it will be much better in the long run. 1. Just because it is cheaper in the long run. 2. What if something happens and you need a big water change one night late? ,.. ,..,.. Just saying. Assuming tank size,. forgive me if small tank. but if this is your first I don't suggest a small tank. Any sand(argonite based) will turn live if seeded with some live sand. Better IMHO to get some live sand from a local and seed. The best thing about the reef aquarium so far for me has been watching all the crazy stuff that grows from the live rock/sand. I love the inverts,. and I love the "life" you never planned on putting in there. Don't go cheap here or you will miss half the experience. Btw if you are in the Atlanta area I have some great "dead",. used to be live sand I could give you. (I see that you are not) Last edited by piznac : 01-24-2011 at 09:13 PM. |

Thanks for the replys. I do plan on getting an RO/DI (as soon as I can) i just figured this would be a good starting while the tank cycles.
Regarding the sand, I have the pool sand already, which is why I asked. I used it once in a tropical tank but didn't like the look. "piznac" the tank is going to be a 20gallon long.
