OK...
I will start with a question NOBODY seems to be able to answer. I came to this sight in hopes of gaining knowledge regarding saltwater tanks, but my questions always seem to revert back to the same place: Lighting. I have a 55 gal, saltwater, and i just recently converted to T5, 10000K, HO flourescent lighting. The reason being, is soley based on wanting to start a Coral population. I currently have 1 chocolate chip star, 1 clown, 1 tang, and about 6 damsels. I also have a anenome kicking around the tank as well. I have only live rock, and a few fake corals to give a bit of character to the environment. Please give me some input regarding the proper lighting requirments, and WHY regular flourescent lighting will not work... From what i understand, regular flourescents don't have the "proper spectrum" needed to produce coral growing results/photosynth, but will regular flourescent HARM the tank in any way??... (also) i do know about 3-5 watts per gallon, to total=275 watts via ending result. I have looked at youtube, online sources, about.com, and MANY MANY other useless sights.. These sights are FULL of people that wish they knew, and instead of taking the time out to learn, they offer bunk, un-educated advice in hopes of gaining hits.. in reality, these people get more negative comments opposed to compliments....(sad, really.) Please let me pick your brains regarding the lights corresponding with coral survival... and i want to thank all replies ahead of time.. I do, very much appreciate any help/advice.. Thanks. |

T5HO lighting on a 55gal will work just fine for you. In fact, that's exactly what I have on my 55gal. If you want to go bigger, I suggest Metal Halide 2X250w with T5 Actinics to get your blue spectrum. To make the corals really pop, you do need the right spectrum in those T5's....420nm to 460nm will get you the correct spectrum. If you want to keep SPS then you'll need MH, but if you stick to LPS and other soft corals, you'll be just fine with a 4x54w T5 HO. One more thing...get rid of that Chocolate Chip Starfish. I had one, and he ate EVERYTHING he could get to. My Polyps, Anemone and a Purple Mushroom I had. BTW....where in Maine are you? I live in Hampden...
