Default Initial Setup Lighting Question

Hey

I setup a FOWLER yesterday and I'm just wondering if/when I should turn the lights on.

I have about 50lbs of Live Rock in the tank at the moment. It's a 55gal tank.

Thanks
C

You should run your lights long enough the corraline and macro algaes on the rock thrive but not so long the ugly algae bloom.

I wouldn't turn on your lights until you're done cycling. Having them on during cycling will just give you problems with nuisance algae, right off the bat.

I've read that you should start with only a few hours of lighting then every few days increase the lighting period. so maybe start off with 3-4 hrs then up to 8 over the course of 2 weeks. Too much lighting can cause algae but too little can inhibit growth of good bacteria and other stuff.

Lighting has nothing to do with building bacteria. Given an ammonia source, they'll show up, with or without lights.

True that.

But the algae will consume any ammonia the bacteria does not.

So I recommend you have lights during cycle to prevent the ammonia spikes.

But then I also recommend you use macro algaes for that reason and to prevent the uglies.
