hello, I am new to having an aquarium and was was given a 15 gallon tank with an powerhead and a whisper charcoal filter. It was used previously for freshwater minnows of various types. The person had problems with algae build up and was tired of the maintenace. My question is if i want to start new, with the thought of using it for a couple of small (native) sunfish, should i be worried about a thoruough cleaning and disinfecting of the tank, gravel and filters and if so, what is the best way to move forward with the best chance of success.

I wouldnt use soap. Id just give it a good scrub with warm water and paper towels. Vinegar and a razor blade can be used on any stubborn deposits. You could use an ammonia based cleaner too if you wanted. Glass isn't porus, but make sure you rinse well with clean water when youre done.
