Ok, so while my tank is cycling I've decided to start planning what I'm going to put in it. The tank is 29G, and has a Tetra Whisper EX45 and a EX30 filters. This is what I've come up with:
4 guppies 3 platys 6 cardinal tetras 6 longfin red minor serpae tetras I've read that the serpaes may nip the guppies. Will tis happen even if I have 6 of them? Do I have space to put it a couple of corys?

I think you would technically have enough room for corys but the problem is that I'm guessing the serpaes will indeed fin nip the guppies, especially because you only have 6. Also guppies, platys, and corys should be in larger groups - 5 or 6 is about the minimum, but if you want to have 3 or 4 different species then it would be advisable to have no less than 7 of a specific species of those fish (if nothing else to prevent possible aggression).

Guppies and platys are not schooling fish and you can have 1 or 3 or however you want.
Between the tetras you might want to stick with just one kind and up the school somewhat. But be prepared for babies if you get female guppies and platies. Cories do best if they are the same species. In a 29 I wouldn't put more than 3 or 4.

Is this old information, or just plain wrong?

Just plain out of date and wrong. Guppies and platies being livebearers, One male will be happy with just a couple of females. They are also just as happy being by themselves. But the way they like to breed they are happiest as long as there is 1 or 2 femalse.

Should I get the guppies and platys in pairs then?

You can do pairs, but do better in trios of 1m 2f. But be prepared for babies. Both adults will eat fry though if there isn't any hiding room for the babies.
