I bought a used 20 gallon tank with rocks and everything. It had been sitting there for quite some time and even after I brought it home it sat without water for about a week.
When I was finally ready I cleaned everything out. The rocks, the filter, and the tank itself veryvery well. I've had it with 6 corydoras, and a betta for about a month now and just last week I saw what looked like a tinytiny snail, but at first thought I was seeing things. I looked now and most definatly have a snail like thing on the glass moving around, and then I saw another one on the other side! Is it possible the snails could have survided without water for so long? If not, any ideas where they've come from? And how do I get rid of them before they get big? |

Hi most definantly (idk on spelling) but any ways I had a snail issue a while back and I left the tank drained hoping to do the trick, and never worked I also tried very hot water and still no go I ended up sifting through my sand with a net and got some clown loaches. I never did get the chance to see if freezing would work it was summer.

The snails won't harm your tank and they won't get that big. Your Betta will probably nip at them, so I don't think overpopulation of snails will be a problem.

It's possible. Some snails have a hard "door" like piece that they can close off their shell with and keep moist for a little while. Did you add live plants? Sometimes snails sneak in that way.
As long as you don't over feed, you shouldn't have a population explosion. I was always paranoid about snails, and got 4 Assassin snails to take care of all the pest snails in my 20g tank. In my 36g tank, I've got TONS of snails - literally tons, lol. Some of them are huge too! None of them seem to be hurting anything, so I just leave them alone. When I notice I'm getting too many, I toss a couple of the baby ones into the 20g to feed the Assassins. (I can't bring myself to feed the big ones to the Assassins... they're just too cute.)
