I have already started my fishless cycle with ammonia and the readings are
4ppm/0/0 after 6 days. I found an LFS willing to give me some mature media. How much do I need for my 72 gallon? I am not sure what he has since he didn't email me back but I'm supposed to meet him at 4 today. Could be ceramics, gravel, filters, not sure. If/when I do get home with some, since I already started my cycle, can I just drop it in, or do I need to do a PWC to bring the Ammonia down to less than 2ppm before adding the mature media? thanks |

You can just drop in. If it is gravel you can use a filter bag or a stocking of some type.

Like Ben said, filter bags are amazing for gravel! Put it at the bottom of your filter, so the water goes through the seed material and up into your filter media.

I ended up getting a bag of gravel and two large ceramic bio gears. I put the gravel in three separate nylon mesh bags in the tank and put the ceramics in the FluVal in the biomedia tray.
