I'm cycling a 10g tank with a shubunkins goldfish (unexpected festival prize). The tank has been set up for 1 week. I just got the test kit yesterday in the mail so my readings yesterday were Ammonia: .25 Nitrite: .5 and Nitrate: 0 Using an Aquatech 5-15 filter and I know it needs to be upgraded.
I went to my parents and they keep a this boy who also won a comet goldfish. The poor thing was in a little 1.5 gallon (why do they even sell those things??) and I felt sorry for him so I took him home to add to our 10g. Yes, I realize the tank is nowhere near big enough for even one of those fish, but they are small and we will remedy the situation in due time. I also realize I should keep a close eye on the ammonia since I added the extra fish. I started doing research and now I'm completely addicted and I'm already dreaming up plans for a tropical tank. Right now we are doing construction on our house, but we're almost done and as soon as we are I will start living out those dreams, lol. I also keep bearded dragons, so I seem to have lots of tanks laying around! I have a 29g I will donate to the goldies (although, now I REALLY want it for a tropical tank). But I also have: 55g (occupied), 2 - 40g breeders (one is occupied, the other is spoken for by a dragon that needs to be upgraded), 2 - 29g (one occupied, one reserved for goldies), 1 - 20g (occupied by the dragon that will be moving into the 40g breeder) and a couple 10g's. I have a beardie enclosure design I really want to do and at that point the 55g and both 40g breeders will be empty. BTW, both my 40g breeders say "DO NOT ADD WATER" but I see people on here using them, so the general consensus is they are okay with water even though they say not to? So many tanks, so little $$!!!! I want my tropical to be a planted community tank. I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the different options but I Google Image search every fish name I come across and I'm slowly learning what everything looks like and which ones are schooling and which ones can go together etc etc etc. I have a Word Doc that I paste fish and plants into that really strike my fancy so I can do further research on those. Right now I really like Blue Rams, Cardinal Tetras, several types of barbs, rasboras and other tetras, gouramis and SHRIMP! Still working out how many of which can go in which sized tank and which ones can or can't go together, but I've got lots of time. I really like the natural look and want to do the beaslbob substrate with lots of plants, driftwood and rocks. So, no particular questions right now...just wanting to jump in and say hello! I LUUURRRVE looking at your tank pics and went through all 16 pages of the tank build forum. Can't wait to show off my own tank! |

I have one beardie in a 40G breeder.. I also have a number of aquatic tanks... The glass thickness on the reptile tank is quite a bit thinner than the aquatic 40G... I wouldn't chance it unless you are up to experiencing a "blow-out"... (Tank wall giving away)... One of the big chain stores 3 or 4 times a year has a $1.00 per gallon sale.. plus if ya can't find a decent tank on Craigs List for $.75 per gallon or less, ya ain't trying... Bill in Va.

Hi, I keep a record of my fish goings on and stuff using MS One Note, I have a section for fish with links to the web on each, same with plants, a section for logging my chemistry and water changes, temp etc. Another section on hardware and one on decor.

I really want to use the 55g I already have but I don't know if it will hold water and I'm sure its scaly occupant would be pretty miffed if I tested it at the moment, lol. |

Oh, and I had my #'s backwards yesterday (didn't have my notes in front of me). The Ammonia was at .5 and Nitrites at .25. Yesterday evening, a day after adding the other fish, Ammonia is the same but Nitrites went up to 1. I'll do a WC this evening.

Sounds like you have lots of tanks!I used to at one time, lol.
A 40 breeder comes in two types. One for reptiles and one for fish.As mentioned the fish ones are thicker glass. definetly stay up on the waterchanges.Goldfish are poop machines and are prone to ammonia poisoning.Glad to hear you are try though.Thats a rarity in this obbsession.Err I mean hobby. I keep my notes the old fashioned way,pen and paper.I have a notebook with all my notes on.I should go digital with it but i just like to be able to write stuff down when I think of them. Would love to see pics of your beardies too!
