Hi, i'm a new member here. I was simply looking for some advice from people who're experienced with tropical fish as i'm new to the tropical side of things.
![]() As the title says, I have an 88L which is about 19 gallons tropical tank set up. It's 30" long, 15" high and 12" wide. The filter filters 450L per hour and the heater is 200w and the temp is 25 celsius. It's been set up for a few months and i've been slowly adding fish. At the moment in there I have: x1 blue three spot gourami x2 female swordtails x2 male guppies. I was simply wondering whether that's stocked enough or whether I could add any more fish as i'm being told all different things. I'm interested in mollies, more guppies and a school of neon tetras. I understand I probably can't have all of that but i'm just looking for guidance on quantity. Many thanks! Also, is it normal for gourami's to be slightly aggressive towards new fish? I know they're aggressive to other gourami's but when I added my guppies earlier they were being chased by him to the point of "sitting" on top of the filter not moving for hours and then I come home later this evening to find them swimming around together? ![]() |

i think you might do alright with a few more guppies, i think itd be too small to put any mollies in there with the fish you already have, the gourami might outgrow that tank, i dont know too much about that variety..

The gourami will grow to about 6 inches max, he's already about 4 inches, so not too big.

its pretty normal for gouramis to be territorial especially when they were one of the first fish added to the tank. the other fish will soon learn to leave him alone, and the worst the gourami should do is chase the other fish around and possibly nip at their fins if they get too close (doesnt normally happen in my 55 gal with 2 gouramis). I appropriately named my blue gourami A**hole, because he terrorizes whoever he can whenever he can lol but doesnt ever do any real harm. the 20 gal might be too small for the gourami after a while and will make the territory problem worse. if you havent had any problems so far you should be fine until he grows a bit more.
I do have to say back when I had the same blue gourami in a 20 gal, he actually would terrorize a gold gourami and she would literally turn flat sideways and scoot under a rock =( she eventually died from the stress. havent had a single problem since they got put in a 55 gal though. adding plants and ornaments will help give your fish more places to hide and be out of sight from the other fish making them happier and less likely to be territorial. hope this helps! good luck! my .02 |

I read that a good rule of thumb for putting fish in a tank is 1" of fish per 1 gallon of water. So lets say for example you want neon tetras (which I love the color of btw), according to Neon Tetra, they are right around one inch per fish. So if that was the only fish in your aquarium you could have 19 or 20 (maybe 1 or 2 more) of them.
lets say however you want fish ranging in different sizes. And I don't know a whole bunch of names so I am just going to say inches. And remember always make sure you are looking at the maximum size of the fish, this is so when they get to that size you don't overcrowd the tank, or buy a fish that will eventually be too big for the tank. so lets say you want several different fish and you are looking at some that grow to 2 inches, 5 inches, and 4.5 inches. You may get something like two of the 5 inch fish, one of the 4.5 inch fish, and 2 maybe 3 of the 2 inch fish. However remember this is only a rule of thumb and depending on decorations and the type of fish you may be able to add more or less. Hope this helped, as I myself am rather new at it as well. My biggest savior was a ton of research and asking the employees at the petsmart I went to for help. |
