while i have no live creatures in my tank atm, i plan to add a few shrimp in my tank with my betta once my tank is cycled. do they really need any extra care or does the fish itself take the bulk of the care and the shrimp is kinda just there?

Bettas will quite often eat shrimp, but not always, so decide if you are going to risk trying it. Ghost Shrimp are cheep, easy to keep and might be big enough not to get eaten. Red Cherry Shrimp are easy to keep, colorful and breed easily but are smaller. If you can get a big enough population going the betta will probably eat a lot of the smaller ones but not get them all so you will always have shrimp in the tank. A lot depends on how into hunting the betta is, their personalities and habbits vary. Make sure the shrimp have cover like plants or decor to hide in.
Shrimp are a sensitive to bad water quality so make sure the tank is cycled and you do water changes etc, but that is pretty much the same as what you will be doing for the fish. Don't use copper based meds, they will kill shrimp. Probably they will get enough food from picking up bits of leftover food. If they are not getting any left over food you can feed them something like micro pellets or algae wafers, basically they will eat any fish food but they don't need a lot, so don't overdo it. Some shrimp are more difficult to keep than others and some, like the filter feeders have special requirements but there are several types of shrimp like ghost shrimp and RCS that are easy to keep and ou won't need to do anything special for. |

I've had iffy results from keeping bettas with shrimp. Water quality wasn't an issue, but the ghost shrimp would "trim" the betta's tail, and the betta would kill any shrimp that dared molt. Amano shrimp seem to go over easier, since they're large enough that even an aggressive betta would think twice about fighting one. Also, amanos eat some types of algae, which is a nice bonus.

I'd get some java moss, it looks nice, not too expensive and will give shrimp a place to hide if you get them, the Betta will enjoy it too.
