Default General sand question

Hi, we have a 55g tank. We used gravel the first time years ago and now that we have moved wanted to try sand. Used Quickrite all purpose sand because we couldn't find medium grade. 1st question is our problem the All-Purpose sand. 2nd do I need to be running the filters. We were running them but it seemed to be stirring it up more so I cut them off and tried to let the sand settle. Its been 2 days and doesn't look any better. What to do...

well I think that if you pour it in a bucket and swish it around and scoop off the sand that floats and repeat until the floating stuff is gone. Run the filter but have a pre filter on the end of it (sponge) so that you don't get sand in the filter and things should settle down in a few days.

Also, once you've rinsed the sand a bunch of times to get rid of the floaty stuff, put it in the tank and leave the filter/s off until it all settles. Once settled, turn the filters on. (Just gives the sand the extra time to settle down with out water movement.)

Good luck! :D

Actually if you rinse the sand then put into the aquarium fill with water slowly with a plate to diffuse the water it won't cloud up as much. And you should be able to run the filter right away. Add some filter floss to the filter to pick up any small particulates floating around.

I've done this many times and the tank would be clear in a couple of hours.

I've used that sand before. From day 1 all the way to day 30 it never cleared up 100%. I ended up taking it all out and buying "pool filter sand" (100 lbs for $16 at my local pool supply place). I cleaned that sand in a bucket with the hose but it didnt even really need it. It never clouded my water at all. Might wanna make the change if you have the time. But if not, good luck
