Ive been cycling my tank now for 3 weeks and today my readings were ammonia 0 nitrites 0 and nitrates 8. Ive had a group of 10 neon tetras in there and I think it might be time for them to get a few more friends in the tank. Im very excited..I was thinking of adding some a few corys and maybe some platys from my fírst tank. Cant wait to see their reaction to their new huge home. Is my choice of fish ok? I plan on getting more fish gradually...dont want to upset my balance. Going to get an air pump today before I put them in.

Cool. How did you get a nitrate level of 8? If using strips, I would verify with a liquid test. Strips are very well known for being inaccurate and if you test directly after a water change your readings can be misleading.

Just did a liquid test...its now 10. Is that good or bad? Im confused now maybe im not cycled :(( Thanks Ben. The original test I did was just one of those 3 in one tests. Obviously not very accurate wont be using those again! Havent done a water change for a few days should I do one before I put more fish in?

As long as you are 0 on ammonia and nitrite you should be fine. The nitrate level is nothing to worry about unless it starts to get too high. 10 is good. Should be kept in the <40ppm range, optimally. Water change is your choice....

Yes thats what I thought but I did use an old filter sponge and some gravel from the old tank so maybe that helped.

theres no set schedule as to how long a tank takes to cycle, it could take 1 week, or it could take 2 months, it's a tossup, the only thing you really can do is try to give it a bump start.

My kid's tank (75g) cycled in 27 days, with fish and nothing from an established tank. Some take over 3 months, but most go 6-8wks if you use fish and you don't already have some seeded material.

I agree the amount of time it takes varies alot. My tank is cycled but there will no more fish in there for a while cause I have an outbreak of ich in the big tank :(
