Default equipment reccomendations?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the aquarium hobby, but I'm eager to be a successful hobbyist!

can anyone reccomend a good biological filter for a smaller size tank? (25 gals) I currently have a carbon cartridge-style filter, and numerous plants to help aide in the process.

also, for water changes- Anyone know of a good pump to use for partial water changes and removal of excess fish waste from the substrate?

THANKS!

Does your filter have room to put some Biomax in it? Biomax is a fantastic biological media! (Box says to change every 3 months - but you don't have to actually change it unless it's falling apart.) So... it can last for years.

Make sure your filter is rated for a tank over 25g. (More filtration is better.)

As for water changes, I just use the old style vacuum where you use your mouth to start the suction.

Are you looking for a filter or filter media? For a 25g, I would look at an Aquaclear 50. The bio-max media mentioned above is incorporated into the filter. It is a hang-on-back (HOB) style filter and very popular.

As far as cleaning/pumping water out, I would just get a 5-gal bucket and a normal gravel vacuum. The water will flow out pretty fast with a syphon going and with only 25g, you will be done in just a few minutes.

I wouldn't mind eventually investing in a whole new filter, but I think in the mean time I would like to use something to incorporate into my existing filter (if possible).

I hear that the carbon filters can be damaging to some fish, so I would like to eventually ween off the one I'm currently using...
