Hi guys,
I'm new to the aquarium hobby, but I'm eager to be a successful hobbyist! can anyone reccomend a good biological filter for a smaller size tank? (25 gals) I currently have a carbon cartridge-style filter, and numerous plants to help aide in the process. also, for water changes- Anyone know of a good pump to use for partial water changes and removal of excess fish waste from the substrate? THANKS! |

Does your filter have room to put some Biomax in it? Biomax is a fantastic biological media! (Box says to change every 3 months - but you don't have to actually change it unless it's falling apart.) So... it can last for years.
Make sure your filter is rated for a tank over 25g. (More filtration is better.) As for water changes, I just use the old style vacuum where you use your mouth to start the suction.

Are you looking for a filter or filter media? For a 25g, I would look at an Aquaclear 50. The bio-max media mentioned above is incorporated into the filter. It is a hang-on-back (HOB) style filter and very popular.
As far as cleaning/pumping water out, I would just get a 5-gal bucket and a normal gravel vacuum. The water will flow out pretty fast with a syphon going and with only 25g, you will be done in just a few minutes. |

I hear that the carbon filters can be damaging to some fish, so I would like to eventually ween off the one I'm currently using... |
