I have also have an AQUEON filter rated for a 60 gallon tank. Each of my powerheads are pumping about 400 gallons an hr. so i get about 1700/gallons hr. of filtration (pretty serious amount imho for a 55 gallon). I'd appreciate some serious criticisms here as i inherited these fish who lived in a 75 gallon with about 5 other tankmates a month ago. Oh ya it's a new tank, i expect amonia spikes but do every other day 10g water changes, and have some cycled material in this tanke from my 37 gallon. I didn't want to do it this way but it was that or the fish died or went to a pet shop. i still can take some to the pet shop, i test the h20 every day
i went back and noticed i could manually define a filter, but for a UGF you have lots of biological filtration, and i'm not sure your calculator takes it into consideration. Also i'm not sure about the stocking levels, but maybe someone else could chime in. Above is details on my tank, but i was wrong on the powerheads, double checking each powerhead is roughly 200/gallons per hr, not 400. My uncle said they were but upon research i think their roughly 200/per powerhead (i have 4). I also use carbon heavily.

Nice tool, especially for a newbie, VERY impressive. It reminds me of epocrates- a useful on-line program designed for doctors/pharmacists to check drug interactions. (only here it's fish interactions!) I would recommend checking them out to get even more ideas for what you've started here. I'm not too computer savvy but this looks like A LOT of work. It is greatly appreciated!

I haven't extensively used the calculator but I have done a few combinations.

I think it would be extremely useful to have additional information under the "suggested" portion (temp, pH, hardness). Things such as if the aquarium should be heavily planted, lightly planted, not planted at all. Lots of aeration and water circulation. If the tank should be particularly shallow or long, if the substrate should be a certain type, etc etc. Perhaps even recommendations on foods to feed the fish or how to feed the fish under the species would be useful too.

I love the tool from what I have seen, though. Nice work!

the site is very good, I like it! For those who use iphones, ipods ipads etc. I actually created an iphone app that does some of these things, it's called AquaPilot. just search it on the app store, or go to aquapilotapp.com or facebook.com/aquapilot to learn more about it. it automatically schedules partial water changes and filter media changes in your ios calendar, and will calculate your tank cycles based on your test results. It does lots of other stuff too... and since I created it, if you leave me feedback I can try to incorporate some of your ideas into it! It's not free but it's cheap, I had to recoup the cost of developing the app. Most people have given it excellent reviews, so maybe it will help you out! i'll check this thread for feedback, as it's usually the users who have the best ideas how to improve a product
