First, do research on your own and have him do research on his own. Compare what you find for how to set up an aquarium that would work well and be stable. If you haven't already, learn about treating water to remove chlorine, and the nitrogen cycle and why it's important.

Decide how you will decorate it before you think about fish, especially if you have no experience with tanks, since while it might be sad, chances are however you decorate the tank will probably outlive whatever goes in the tank. I suggest live plants. They can really help any tank, and the fact that they grow and change (some grow quite slowly though) adds more interest to the tank, and makes fish feel more comfortable. They aren't actually hard to grow, for the most part. They can actually become the stars of the tank, just look up pictures of planted tanks!

Most of all though, please don't go out buying fish just because "they look cool". Remember that these are live animals, and do have requirements. Research everything and anything you're thinking about putting in the tank. Sometimes you find out that something you thought would be fine, is in fact, not at all suitable. Take goldfish for instance. While most people think they do fine in bowls, in reality, each goldfish requires at least 20 gallons, and each other fish requires 10 gallons more!

Having a good tank takes time and patience, which is why they don't make great pets for children. I'm not saying that your boy will get bored or impatient and forget about the tank (it's the parents job to make sure pets get taken care of) but it is a lot of responsibility and hard work.

All that being said, decorate and cycle your tank. Once that is done, come back and ask about fish. It make take awhile, but I promise it can be worth the wait. (It's better than fish dying left and right!)

Ya the ghost fish was a it looks cool fish. The tag said begginners but as i looked it up to find out if it was a male or female. I gound out the rest. He is sad but i dont think its a fish that deserves the tank. It is still living but hides in a corner. I just want sugestions so i can look them up. I have endlers n mollys in a 29 g tank. E guppies too. What i dont want is food for a freinds tank of ciclets. But he will have to learn. N he is. I made him do a tank change of 50% taday. N put drops of oh plus n amona drops in the new water. Hopping that helps. The 2 placo i removed from my tank cuz they attact my fish r in their n r going to a new home this week. Idk if i can save slinkie. The ghist catfish. But i hope he learns. No fish on whem. Gotta know. A freind said non african cicleds r good. But idk.

Sorry if I can't actually understand a bit of what you're saying.

As I said, research first and I really can't say that enough. Platies and mollies and black skirt tetras might be suitable, but you really need to get your tank cycled first. After that, you can have more than just non-african cichlids. There's really a huge number of fish that might work, but sort out the problems first and get your tank cycled. Then, and only then, think about what fish you might want.

As Kay said research is your friend.Really it depends on what you think would strike his fancy. Is he wanting lots of plants or is he willing to do the maintenance that goes along with a fish only tank.

Google search aquarium fish and browse through what shows up.Look through threads here, look at name tags at a LPS.Write down any that catch his eye. Then go home and research them and see what is suitable for the tank size.

Re-home the ghost catfish so he has a chance at life. Give him back to the store maybe. Then plant your tank and do a fishless cycle (with a bit less ammonia so you don't burn the plants.) While the tank is cycling, research fish. Make sure you check the adult size of the fish and if it needs to be in a group or can be kept singly. (Ghost catfish need a group of at least 6.)
