Default 2nd fish type question

Thanks for your responses to my initial fish question. I cycled the tank then added 7 Zebra Danios. Everything is looking good far.

Now I have a question about the 2nd type of fish to add to my tank. It is a 36 gal bow front.

I am considering Corys, possibly albino corys. I am also considering either platys or tetras. And finally, I am thinking about a dwarf Gourami.

My questions: Which type would be best to add first? I am leaning towards the Corys but have no problem changing the order.

If I go with Corys, how many should I have and have many should I add at one time?

Do Platys need salt? I've read conflicting reports. If so, will that be harmful to my Zebras? I do know about the male/female ratio.

Should I go with 1 Dwarf Gourami or would it be better to have more than one?

Thanks in advance.

1. I would add the cories first, but I have no personal experience with either gouramis or cories myself.
2. Not sure, but I would assume about six for a school. I add mine 3 at a time, with a week in between. Different people have different methods, however.
3. Yes they do, and yes it will be. I would stay away from livebearers like platies unless you want a LOT of bebehs. The females can even store sperm for up to several months, so even if you only get females, they might still get pregnant.
4. I would go with one and see how he/she behaves first. I imagine more wouldn't hurt, but it would be good to see how he/she interacts with their new environment first.

Just my thoughts...

Platys do not need salt, but they are livebearers, so be careful of what sexes you get and in what ratios if you don't want about a million fry in your tank. I love Platys, they are hardy, cute, and active. I have three females, but two were already preggers when I bought them. One of them had a double round pregnancy and ended up giving birth to 60 fry total. I actually had a lot of fun raising them and rounded them up at about two months old and took them back to the fish store.

Now that I have three non-pregnant females, they are very happy schooling together, and I don't have to worry about more baby fish.

I stand corrected. I think I was thinking of mollies or something else

Gouramie's are really fun to watch BUT... the Dwarf variety is notorious for carrying a disease that is wiping out the availablilty in the US and else where... Do a google search on Dwarf Gouramie Disease and you'll get tons of hits. Plus the availability of females are pretty scarce. There are way too many specie of fish and even other gouramie's to select from without the concern of the Dwarfs. Cory's?.. I'd add all 6 at one time.. if your tank is stable... They love to hang togeather... I just picked up 12 fry about 1/2 inch in length and have doubled in size in 2 weeks!... They're a trip! Bill in Va.

I'll second what williemcd said about disease. You might look into other smallish gourami, like pearl gourami. I'm not sure if they do well alone, or if one would be suitable for your tank, but it's worth a little research.
