Default Will Nipped Fantails Repair?

My beautiful Red Cap Oranda has been nipped at a bit by a new Calico Fantail we put in a few days ago -- a real aggressive bugger; it seems the Oranda has sustained some fantail damage...not severe, but I'm wondering if their tails regenerate on their own. Is this so?

I would say yes, i used to keep fan tails and they got quite a few nipps from lager fish but once they had been seperated the tails began to grow back. Clear to begin with but after time the full colour returned to the tail.

hope this helps

Thanks, Dave. Indeed, it did help; I hope the same comes to my Oranda...

However, my Oranda's fan tails aren't colored, they're the silver/pearlescent white that many of them exhibit...

Does what you suggest still ring accurate?

Tails will come back. I've had Platies loose entire tail to fin rot and came back. Does the tank with slime coat and it may help heal a little faster.

Thanks JR...

That makes me feel a bit better, as Dave did as well. When you say dose the tank with slime coat, do you mean stress coat?

Yes, stress coat. Personally, I don't like stress coat+, just the regular stuff.

Okay...

But I have always been so confused by the differences in these products! I have stuff that claims to have SLIME coat in it -- like Prime and my Aqueon water conditioner...but is that the same thing as adding pure stress coat products or slime coat products?

I know API makes stress coat, but is that what I should be putting in there?

I would recommend adding some aquarium salt to the water. If you gradually add salt to A low concentration of 0.1% is 1 teaspoon per gallon or 1 tablespoon per 5 gl. This low rate will not do any damage to most water plants.
A medium concentration is between 0.1% and 0.5%, but personally I don't go higher than 0.3%. This rate should be obtained in 12 hour intervals, 0.1% salt for 3 times.
A high concentration is up to 0.9% is only recommended for very short treatments, like a dip or short bath, otherwise its deadly to your fish.
This and keeping your water perfect, ie.. ammonia, nitrates, nitrites will help in the healing.

My fantail has had nibbled fins and torn fins, as long as the tear hasn't reached the ray, then they will re-generate. You can add Melafix to the water for quicker results, but I'd rather not add anything to my tank. My fanny's tail is growing slowly, but it's looking beautiful.

Thanks; I don't think I am going to add anything to the water right now, as the damage to her fins doesn't look that monumental, and a good deal of this behavior has diminished since I first reported it -- however, I am concerned about your comment regarding "as long as it doesn't go down to their rays"...does this mean ripped/damaged all the way to the fish's body? My Oranda is definitely not damaged that severely...just some tail end evidence...

Do you have any pics of your goldies to share?
