I had a red cap oranda an orange ryukin, which i mistakenly called beavis and butthead... I had about 4-500 frys, unfortunately the racoon were having them as food in the outdoor pond... I ran out of places to put them, i had tanks, buckets. I end up giving most of them away, some were born deformed, etc... |

Goldfish are like dogs, there are many breeds but only one species so they should all be able to breed with each other. Koi carp are in the same family but are a different species so don't cross with goldfish.

ETA: It's like wolves and dogs. They can hybridize because they belong to the same genus, Canis. Goldfish, koi, and carp all belong to the genus Carassius. |

Domestic goldfish and wild goldfish are both Carassius auratus and can readily interbreed. Koi carp are Cyprinus carpio carpio and not closely related so it is probably impossible for them to breed together naturally. As both are in the carp family perhaps it can be done under lab conditions with human intervention but the offspring would likely be sterile. When people claim their goldfish and koi have crossed it is more likely that they are seeing the offspring of their goldfish reverting to wild traits. It is a subject that interested me and after doing some research this is what I understood but I'm not an expert, if anyone has more in-depth info I'd be interested. If it helps this is from Wikipedia
Domestic Goldfish: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Cypriniformes Family: Cyprinidae Genus: Carassius Species: C. auratus[1] Subspecies: C. a. auratus Wild goldfish: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Cypriniformes Family: Cyprinidae Genus: Carassius Species: C. carassius Koi carp: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Cypriniformes Family: Cyprinidae Genus: Cyprinus Species: C. carpio Subspecies: C. c. haematopterus There has been some recent debate about the exact origins of domestic goldfish, here I have used older information for the purpose, so as not to cause confusion, as there may still be changes made in species names etc. As a comparison: Domestic dog: Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Canidae Genus: Canis Species: C. lupus Subspecies: C. l. familiaris Wild dog (grey wolf): Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Canidae Subfamily: Caninae Tribe: Canini[2] Genus: Canis Species: C. lupus Last edited by snail : 08-09-2011 at 07:48 AM. |
